There are many cases within the GTA that involve illegal firearms in vehicles.
Listed below are only a few of them:
Taking Guns off Toronto Streets.
Too often illegal guns are being transported in cars of drug dealers and criminals on our streets and highways. Recently, a man was shot and killed in his car on the 401 in the middle of rush hour. Local police officers at 13 Division located at Allen Road and Eglinton Ave. are asking for help in combating this disturbing trend of guns in cars as are police officers across the city. In fact, David Wilson head of the Toronto Police Association and the Toronto Police Service Board have endorsed my call for zero tolerance when it comes to guns in cars.
For this reason I have introduced a private members bill, Bill 56 – Unlawful Firearms in Vehicles Act 2008 to give the police the authority to:
- Immediately impound the vehicle if there is an illegal gun in the car.
- Suspend the driver licence of the driver on the spot if an illegal gun is found in the vehicle.
My private members bill – Bill 56 if passed would also impose additional fines of up to $10,000 and jail time. This would be an addition to criminal code prohibitions that exist but are difficult to enforce and get convictions on.
Toronto Police Chief William Blair has joined O.P.P. Commissioner Julian Fantino in supporting my proposed law which like all private bills by MPP’s needs widespread public support to be passed into law.
As an MPP, I have been successful in getting a number of private members bills made into law for instance:
- Allowing for the instillation of Red Light Cameras at dangerous intersections.
- Establishing the Oak Ridges Moraine Protection Act
- Ending Mandatory Retirement in Ontario
- Allowing Portable Heart Defibrillators in public places.
- Regulating Traditional Chinese Medicine
By signing petitions and getting public support with letters and email campaigns my 5 private members bills have become law in Ontario.
Hopefully with hard work and your support Bill 56 could become law.
You can help take guns off our neighbourhood streets by joining police officers in
